30 Days of Truth - Day Five- In This Life...

Day 05 → Something you hope to do in your life.

I feel as if this is a little unfair, because I have so MANY things I want to do during my life. There's a very long list of things I'd really like to be able to experience, accomplish, and conquer. But there are really only two things that dominate the list:

a) I want to find that special someone, and
b) I want to move out into the country where I can have some land, some animals, and a pond.

Life never turns out as planned. Of this, I am painfully aware. So I can sit here and say, "Oh, I can do one or the other, but it will never turn out that way," or I may decide, "There's no reason why I can't have both, although I may have to start out alone to do it." The bottom line is that, no matter what I do to try to direct where my life is headed, around every turn, with every passing week, I realize that I am not really in control of it.

Aliens. That's what's in control of my life. Roswell Refugee aliens now hiding in some remote part of Washington State.

Ever since I can remember (and I mean the beginning of my thought-processing consciousness, say, 4 or 5 years old), I have always wanted to live in the country. I hate the city - always have. All the best times of my life have been in the country. Some of the times where I've had to work the hardest, longest, most grueling hours in unpredictable weather have been in the country. Some of the most frightening things in my life have happened in the country (Think almost cutting off your thumb completely and being 2+ hours away from any kind of doctor, much less an ER. But that's another story for another time!).

The problem with living in the city and trying to accomplish the two goals I mentioned is that you're kind of stuck. It's hard to find jobs in remote areas or small towns. In addition, you continue to meet city boys (or ex-country boys) and most of them are perfectly happy in the city and don't want to/can't move. So I've always looked at it as if I need to get the fuck out of here while I'm between men. If you know me, you know that doesn't happen very often. Good or bad, I seem to be attached to someone damn-near all the time.

In order for me to move, I have to find a job. I've been looking for 2 years (Texas is a big place. I'm not being picky about where I go - I just don't want north or east.) and still haven't managed to find anything except an interview in El Paso which, I'm sorry, that's one place west I am NOT living. The actually job locating has been the most difficult part. Then, trying to explain to country folk why they should hire someone from the city, especially HOUSTON (*horrified gasps*), is almost impossible. The only people in Texas who like Houston are some of the people IN Houston, or disillusioned teens from a small town who think getting out of where they are and going to a huge city is the answer to all their discontent. Everywhere else, you mention Houston (or even a suburb of Houston), and they lower their eyes, and quietly say, "I'm sorry," "How can you LIVE there?!", "I could never live in a place like that," or "Oh." And that's the conversation killer.

But I'm networking every time I take a trip. I volunteer with groups that get me out into new places and I try to make friends and contacts. I check a variety of websites on a regular basis, hoping I'll find something I'm qualified for. It's just really hard to get some of them to even give you a chance when they see where you're from. Even the area code is a giveaway, because my address is not actually "Houston." It's a small city outside of Houston just over the county line that 97% of Houstonians haven't even heard of. But the area code...always gives it away.

I feel as if maybe I just need to find the job first, move, and see who I can find once I arrive. Maybe that's the only way to accomplish these two goals that don't really seem to go together. Tom, my last boyfriend, wanted out of the city. We'd looked at lots outside the city and tried to decide how far out we could go where he could still make it to work. If we had gotten married, all of that would have happened for me. And he would have taken care of me and given me everything I ever wanted. But I didn't want him to, and it got to a point where I hated even looking at him. So he had to go - and so did my dreams of that one man I'd found who wanted out as badly as I do.

Then I started dating Troy. This is where Goal #2 comes in. I wasn't looking for him. I wasn't looking for anyone at all to date. I was happy trying to nurse my wounds from the breakup with Tom and hadn't planned on trying to meet anyone. I've known Troy for many, many years, so it wasn't unusual that we started talking about car club stuff one night at the meeting. It just sort of happened. And my Groove Recovery Project was scrapped, in a matter of 2 weeks, because I'd found the next one.

At this point, I am hoping he will be the last one. I am so in love, and so happy, and yet so scared of him leaving me because I'm a neurotic nutjob with so many flaws. His new job is not helping but, again, that's a story for another time. I want to spend the rest of my life with him. Before, there was always that "but" when I was with someone. Hell, you read all that shit about my ex-husband last post. Even Tom had problems I thought I didn't want to deal with. Troy - none of that exists. Every "flaw" he has is something I know I can live with. I don't even consider them flaws; they're 'endearing quirks.'

I've had a few dreams I've wanted to accomplish in life, and I've let men derail them. I've never been resentful - it was my decision - but although I want so desperately to move out of Houston, I feel like I may be able to handle it, so long as I was happy in other ways. I could be with Troy and be happy here. He makes it worth it.

I'm not getting any younger. The reality is that I will have a very hard time finding a teaching position in a small town anywhere in this state. People die or retire in those positions. The longer I've been teaching, the higher my salary. Most small towns are in a financial crunch with educational funds, and they don't want to spend it on a new hire. Anyway, the point is that, even if I find a new industry, it's possible things won't work out and I may still end up back here. It's a serious gamble. It would also require leaving the person I consider the love of my life and, hopefully, the last man I'll ever date.

My plan from here on out is to keep looking for a new job, but something local. I have more opportunities here, anyway. (so how sad is it that i still cant find work?) If things don't work out with Troy, then I'll continue on with the plan of starting over somewhere else - to find that small town without a 24-hour WalMart - and see what kind of life I can make for myself there, although it might be a lonely one for awhile. But that's okay. Isn't that kind of the point of wanting to live out in the middle of nowhere?

As bad as that yearning to live in the country may be, the yearning I have to spend the rest of my life with the man that so perfectly fits is so much stronger. I'd give up practically anything to make that work. And if I have to put the country dream on hold forever, it's a sacrifice I'm willing to make for the sake of finding true, lasting love. And if I accomplish that goal, that is something you can never regret.

30 Days of Truth - Day Four - It Would Be Easier If He Just Died

30 Days of Truth: Day 04 → Something you have to forgive someone for.

Originally, I was going to write this one on November 5th, the next day in my blogging list. This would have been significant to me because it was the day I got married to Matt.

I met Matt through my cousin and her husband. Her hubby was best friends with Matt and they introduced us at their annual Halloween party. I remember meeting him at parties past but not being too impressed with his excessive drunkenness. Red flag #1.

We ended up going back to my apartment after the party and had too much sex and then he decided he liked it enough to see me again. I hadn’t expected anything from him but, after a few weeks, he asked me if I wanted to be his girlfriend and actually see each other exclusively. For some reason, I thought that would be a good idea. He moved in shortly thereafter and left his non-running car at his apartment complex. I drove him around a lot. Red Flag #2.

As I got to know him, I heard bits and pieces of why he was an absentee father to his then 7-year-old son. His excuse was that the mother wouldn’t let him see the child because of his partying ways. I told him that if he really loved his son enough, he needed to call the mom every single day and ask to talk to his son – to prove to her that while he may have an active social life, he’s actually stabilizing his life and wanted to be a good father. He halfheartedly tried. Red Flag #3.

For a very long time while I was going to college, we both partied a lot. I never went any further than drinking. Matt insisted on a Guy’s Night Out every Friday, where I was left home alone with nothing to do because most of my friends were married and had young children at home. He would say he would be home by 11 or so. At a quarter past 11, I’d call to see where he was. “I’m going to finish this pitcher and I’ll be on my way.” This went on every 30 minutes until I eventually just cried myself to sleep. He wouldn’t come home until hours after the bars had closed, sometimes he would refuse to answer his cell, and he never had an excuse or an apology. Red Flag #4.

I gave him an ultimatum: Quit drinking or move out of my house. He agreed and we did try a few times to attend AA which, of course, since he didn’t want to quit in the first place, didn’t really work. Red Flag #5. Our new attempts at sobriety worked out quite well for months, or so I thought.

Out of the blue, Matt got fired from work. He was a bill collector at a law firm. He said they were ‘downsizing,’ but I heard him on the phone telling someone he got fired after testing. I knew they had to be tested on federal debt collection law and wondered if perhaps he was fired for failing that test. But he never actually told me he was fired, so I thought maybe his pride was too hurt to be honest with me about it. Red Flag #6. He began working at his cousin’s insurance agency until something better came up.

There were many nights where I would wake up and he was on my computer and if I came out into the office, he’d close the browser. So, like any rational woman would do, I put a keylogger on my computer. Red Flag #7.

I began monitoring his computer usage. I noticed he was instant messaging with Trisha, his ex-fiancee. She had 5 kids with 3 different men, lived hours south of us and was supposedly engaged to another man. Matt had told me that he fell in love with her children while they were together and that he still missed them. The problem was that, after reviewing many of the IMs, he told her he loved her. I was not okay with that, but I couldn’t confront him yet because then he’d know I was spying on his computer usage. So I did what any rational woman would do; I snuck his cell, copied down her number, and sent her a text telling her to leave him alone, that it was totally inappropriate for them to be conversing in such a personal manner. She text me back agreeing. Red Flag #8.

Eventually, he got a job lead. Somewhere between the lengthy interview, hiring, and training process, he told me they changed their minds on hiring a new group. So, of course, I checked the keylogger files. I found many searches worded several different ways but, basically, they were all trying to find out information about cocaine and drug testing. Red Flag #9. He said he found a job working for a different mortgage company his other cousin was involved in, and he began working.

Since I went on high alert at that point, I began asking to take his truck to run errands rather than my old piece of shit truck. That was when I started rifling through his truck (he was messy and kept all his receipts shoved down in the door pockets) to see what I could find each day. I began finding receipts from bars he’d stopped at before he got home. Apparently he was getting off work over an hour earlier than he said and was stopping off at a bar before coming home. I never noticed the alcohol on his breath because I was attending college and working as a tutor, so I was gone most of the time anyway.

I also began looking at his keys, his center console, and the steering column. As a person who used to have a serious, serious coke problem, I know what to look for. I’d seen behavioral changes but, honestly, I think I was in denial. Now, with the physical evidence of the key’s grooves packed thickly with cocaine, there was no way to deny what was happening. Red Flag #9.

This doesn’t even begin to address the fact that we fought with each other all the time when he was drunk and high. I have the scars on my face to prove it. Truth be told, I wasn’t really a ‘victim.’ Yeah, he started it, but I fought back with such force and fury that I was never fully overtaken by him. I’d been in abusive relationships before where I just took it – I wasn’t going down without a serious fight and causing some permanent damage to the other guy. Klassy, no?

I started to pay more attention to what was going on. He’d take more “trips” to run errands. He’d have to “drop off mortgage paperwork” to another agent at late hours. He’d go pick up his brother from 3 blocks down and they’d be gone 4 hours. I finally demanded to go with him one night to “drop off paperwork” and, although he’d spoken to the “agent” 15 minutes prior, when we got there, the “agent” wasn’t home when I told him I wasn’t staying in the truck by myself because of the neighborhood. Come ON. I could hear the other half of the conversation because he was on his cell and I could HEAR IT. I began hacking his email and found the hundreds and hundreds and hundreds of dollars of payday loans he’d taken out – and wasn’t repaying. I found out that he had pawned his guitars (one of which I spent an ASSLOAD of money on for him), his amp, some jewelry, and his truck’s stereo (which he replaced with the stock one – his excuse was that it sounded better). RED FLAGS EVERYWHERE!

I knew we had some problems, so we went to a few relationship counselors. He hated all of them because he thought they were siding with me. Basically, he didn’t like being told he needed to walk the straight and narrow and try not to fight dirty (name calling, etc) and try to resolve instead of destroy.

For some reason, throughout all of this, I still thought I could help him through his problem. I thought it was insecurity due to his inability to be the breadwinner of the household – I was a full-time college student with a part-time job and I still made more money than he did – and it was my duty as his girlfriend to help lift him up and help him succeed. Because we were in love. For some reason, I thought marriage would be a good idea.

In retrospect, I’m trying not to dry heave.

We got engaged on a night when we were in his hometown, when he was shitfaced drunk; I had been sleeping due to a migraine partially induced by a fight he’d been having with his brother all night, but he woke me up, drove me out to some remote location on a bluff, proposed with no ring (which my grandmother had selflessly donated to the cause and he’d left it at home – that’s how much he cared), and I accepted. He didn’t even get down on one knee. And, like a fool who never believed she could do any better, I said yes.

The sobriety with alcohol came and went, but I’m pretty certain he was still using. He decided that, since I was stuck, he would go ahead and do whatever he wanted to. He had contributed not one cent to the wedding – I was using my own money for the occasion – and I’d already put down thousands in deposits I would not get back. I was so serious, however, that I gave him the ultimatum and flat-out told him I would boot his ass, have a huge party with great cake and 2 kegs, and carry on with my life Matt-less. He tested that, right up until a month before the wedding.

The last night he got drunk, he was out until all hours at a sports bar known for its cocaine trade. He kept saying he was going to run an errand, but never would leave. He finally left and just never came back. I kept calling his cell but he would either hang up on me or just send me to voice mail. I called a locksmith and had the locks changed. I was done and okay with that choice. The next morning, when I went to leave for school, there was a box on the porch with a note. The note said, “I just wanted to give you this in person, but you wouldn’t let me in. I knew you wanted it, so here’s your wedding present. Enjoy it while you’re alone.” (I’m 100% certain there were misspelled words, and he probably used the wrong form of ‘you’re,’ but that’s just cuz he was an idiot) Inside the box was a black glass vase I’d been eyeing while we were getting our wedding rings sized. I would have been thrilled to pieces to get it, except for the events that took place that night. Oh, and the jewelry store was across the street from that bar. He went to get my motherfucking wedding present and couldn’t even keep himself from going in that goddamned bar.

His present softened me enough to let him come home. And we had no problems for a very, very long time. We got married (I’m pretty sure he was high at the wedding, now that I think about it), I graduated college, began teaching high school, and things seemed to be good for a year or so. We seemed to live a fairly normal life of newlyweds. I was finally able to afford my first new car ever.

Then we decided to buy a house.

His cousin’s mortgage company would help us, he said. In an effort to “do my part,” since he was getting us the deal, I took on two additional jobs besides my full time teaching position to try to earn enough money for everything we needed while he worked overtime following leads in the mortgage industry so that he could begin generating a decent income. I had to pick up the slack for his job that just hadn’t taken off yet.

(oh my GOD – even I’m bored of talking about this now.)

He got me to sign blank mortgage papers because I was so unavailable to meet with people. He was my husband. I trusted him to get us a good deal. He did not. An interest-only ARM with no money down doesn’t sound good to me. But it was signed and done.

Then we had an issue with a box of checks being stolen and used and the bank not wanting to refund the money, and so on and so forth. It was taking forever to get reimbursed.

Then I found out he started taking out payday loans again. Against a paycheck he wasn’t getting. He was falsifying check stubs since he was “working” for his cousin.

So we tried counseling again as a married couple. Three counselors we went through because he hated all of them. I invited him to locate one through his insurance. He claimed his wouldn’t pay for dual counseling. I told him we could pay ours separately through our own insurance and just visit together but, oh no, that wouldn’t work for him. So there you go.

So I guess the stress of everything was getting to him and he started using (or at least picked up speed with it) again. He would come home later than he should have from “work,” go upstairs and “work out” for hours, get on his computer, and wouldn’t come down until who knows when. I didn’t know, because I was passed the eff out asleep from working so much.

Work sent me on a conference 3 hours away for 4 days for training. The night before our last day, Matt called me at midnight or so, freaked out. He said there was something in the attic. He went to open the door to look up in there, and something slammed it down on him as hard as it could and cut his face all up. He sent me a pic message of it. Now, I know full well my house is haunted (every one I’ve ever lived in has had some kind of entity in it), but I’d never had such violence occur before. Come to think of it, I never had bad spirits – angry and violent ones – until Matt came along. But I told him I needed him to take the dogs and go to my parents’ house across the neighborhood and we’d deal with it when I got home. He said okay, I called my parents to tell them he was coming over, but he never showed up.

When I called him back at home, his conversation with me was totally unintelligible. I had no idea what he was trying to say, and he couldn’t remember what he’d said not even two sentences prior. I was trying to figure out what was wrong with him, and then phone went dead. He wouldn’t pick up, so I called my dad back and asked him to check on Matt. I knew he was all fucked up on something, but I wanted to make sure he hadn’t died on my couch.

Dad went back, woke him up, and had a very confusing conversation with him as well. He insisted Matt was not drunk, but he knew something was wrong with him.

The next morning, I called Matt. He tried to explain it all away as being drunk but, my non-drinking father didn’t smell anything on him and can smell it a mile away, I knew he was lying. Basically, I told him to be out of my house by the time I got home and to remove nothing but his clothes. I cried a little, I stopped a lot on the way home, and stayed on the phone a lot trying to explain to my friends and family what was going on. And, sure enough, he was gone and everything was still in the house – even most of his clothes.

I began investigating attorneys for a divorce.

Three days after arriving back home to my empty house, our mortgage company called and told me they were foreclosing and I needed to come up with 4 months’ worth of payments. Matt, who was “taking care of all the house-related bills,” had never made a single mortgage payment. And I also found out insurance wasn’t escrowed in, and neither were our taxes.

A barrage of financial crises befell me. My husband wanted to come home. My students were terrible, horrible, no good, very bad kids. My dogs were depressed because I was depressed. My life sucked. Plus, I needed money and Matt said he was earning an income again. So I told him he could come back – on one condition. He had to enter a drug counseling program. I had no intention of staying with him, but my lawyer said if I could convince him to do that and make copies of his enrollment paperwork, he would walk away from the divorce totally empty-handed. So that’s what I did. I let him come back home, too. Less than a week after his enrollment, his truck was repo’d and he had to “quit attending drug counseling” because he couldn’t get there and I refused to let him take my Jeep.

He began using again and became increasingly more violent. He would rifle through everything in the house, trying to prove I was cheating on him and on and on. He was super-paranoid about everything. He threatened to kill the cops who were going to show up when I had to call them on him one night. It was stupid. But I gave him one last chance and told him he could come back and we’d just start all over again fresh if he’d clean it all up. That worked for a few weeks and then I had to kick him out again because of his drunken nights, lying, and not paying his own way.

He was served with papers but refused to sign them – I told him it didn’t matter because it’s Texas: The No-Fault Divorce State. Eventually he came over and signed them, shoved the chair away from the table, and walked out the front door, leaving it wide open. And that was the last I ever saw of him.

But it’s not the last of his ghost. I have suffered financially in every way possible. Even now, I’m still facing foreclosure (over 3 years later), and my credit is shot. There are still people calling me looking for him. I still get mail with his name on it. Hell, I still have people calling me by my old married name, although it was legally changed back. I hate even seeing it. I had to dredge up all that bullshit when I applied for a passport! I’m so over having him affect my life, but it’s never going to end.

I ended up ditching my mother’s side of the family over this. Because of my cousin and her husband and their loose, lying lips. That whole side of the family has nothing better to do than gossip about lies. My cousin and her hubs (best friends with matt, remember) more or less decided keeping Matt as a friend was more important than sticking with family. I didn’t even ask them to pick – they just did it. I should have realized it; Nick was Matt’s coke buddy. All of them – all that side of the family – couldn’t shut the fuck up over any of it. I’m the first to get divorced in the family so, apparently, it’s great after-dinner conversation fodder.

I skipped out on Thanksgiving and spent it in the Caribbean with Troy and his family. I am not attending any Christmas functions with that side of my family at all. I haven’t responded to any of my aunt’s emails. I’m just done. It’s hard, though, because one of my cousins lives 2 blocks from me, and one of my aunts lives 4 blocks from me. But whatever. The awkward passing of vehicles on the streets is a small price to pay.

They claimed to care but, when they found out I threw Matt out, do you think anybody called? Do you think anybody checked on me throughout the separation or divorce process? When my paternal grandmother died, do you think anybody called me? (no, but matt did send me a text telling me he was sorry, that he loved her too. Bullshit. And, how did he find out?!) When I had to put down my elderly dog I’d had for 11 years, do you think anybody called? And my mother had informed them of all of it. Fuck them. That’s not family.

My mother saw her sisters a few weeks ago and they were telling her all about Matt, and how he was about to get married and that his girlfriend was about to have their baby any day and my mom asked why they felt she needed to know about it. Their reply: “Well, he IS Angie’s ex-husband.” My mother said, “Yeah, but that’s just the point: EX. There’s no reason for her to care about any of it.”

But my mom told me anyway, and it pissed me off. I got really, really, really angry. I knew he wanted more kids deep, deep down inside, although he said it was okay if we didn’t. I knew he was with a woman he’d known since high school. I DON’T CARE. I’M STILL CLEANING UP HIS MOTHERFUCKING MESS, AND HE DOESN’T DESERVE TO BE HAPPY YET!

I’ve managed to write almost 3500 words about this asshole. I’ve spent so much time trying to fix everything he fucked up, and things I had to neglect while barely managing to hold on. The roundabout thing here is that I know I need to forgive him for it but I can’t. He has caused me so much misery and ruin. I had a hard time in relationships for a very long time and, hell, even now I have trust issues and second-guess everything Troy tells me and analyzes whether or not he’s telling me the truth and calculating timetables in my head and, sometimes – but not often – I catch myself counting odometer miles and matching them up with his accounts of his day. It’s sad, sad, sad. So yeah, Matt’s bullshit has had far-reaching consequences on me, at least.

I need to forgive, but I can’t. A really big, big part of me still hopes he dies an untimely, painful death for all the trouble he’s caused me and my family.

The End! (finally)

30 Days of Truth: Day Three - Let it Go

Day 03 → Something you have to forgive yourself for.

Oh, this should be easy. I am my own worst critic. Marya Hornbacher outlined it best when she said, "Anything you can do to me, chances are I do it to myself already, and I hit harder than you ever could." And she was right, because I routinely cut myself up over stupid bullshit all the time.

So. What do I need to forgive myself for? There was something I'd been carrying for over a decade, but I handled that a couple of months ago. There are many things for which I feel guilty, but I'll go with the most recent and the most troublesome, and leave it at that.

Almost a year ago, when I first started talking to Troy is a serious way, his team was in a really big race in town. I had a plan. He was a small part of that plan, at the time. Basically, I was just trying to sleep with him and move on. I had a groove to rediscover.

He invited me to come out to the race both days, gave me a free pass, but I didn't make it down there until Saturday night. The race was already over for the day. They'd broken the car and were staying up all night to fix the overheating issue, which turned out to be a blown head gasket and a bad radiator. It warped the head, too, so they were a little busy, to say the least.

I hung out for awhile, watched, ate dinner with them, shamelessly flirted with Troy, and handed people wrenches. But eventually I got tired and it continued to get colder and although I had delusions of him asking me to stay in his camper with him that night, I figured it probably wasn't going to happen (he was in serious race mode), so I decided to leave.

He walked me to my car - only because all his guy friends told him to - and they stood there staring, anxiously awaiting the passionate kissing that didn't happen. We did, however, talk for almost 45 minutes about anything and everything. He asked me to come out to see the end of the race Sunday. I told him I'd have to see, as I was supposed to have plans. As I was getting in my truck, I heard his friends fuck with him about the plain good bye which, admittedly, I was glad they did. I wanted anything I could get from him and was disappointed that he hadn't wanted to.

The next day, my ex-boyfriend, Scott, from a long, long time ago came down. He let me drive his Vette and the whole purpose of his visit was for him to " try to win me back." Kind of a long story. Anyway, he insisted on driving me down to Kemah and we had lunch at a little seafood place. As we drove down the highway, I remember wondering what was going on with Troy and his team.

He called while I was eating and I let it go to voicemail. I didn't know what to say to him. I wanted to hang out, but I also wanted to get something out of Scott and I felt like I deserved it, after everything he'd put me through. There was a really big part of me that wanted him to go the extra distance to try to win me back, just so I could crush him a little. So I didn't talk to Troy - mostly because I didn't want to have to lie to him about why I wasn't coming out.

After lunch, after the drive, after the rather annoying sex, after Scott left, and after the few Internet searches I did on him and figured out he'd been lying to me again, Troy called a second time. I answered. His car and his team won the highest award given by that particular racing circuit. He was so proud, so excited, and he couldn't wait to email the pics.

Immediately I felt bad. I should have been with him at the race, supporting someone I knew was a good guy, rather than indulging in promiscuous, egocentric bullshit.

As a little bit of time went on (like, a week and a half, or so) and Troy and I spent more time together, I began to realize just how important that race was and how important it was that they won. And how much of a bitch I was for not going, and lying about where I was and why I couldn't be there with him. He deserved my support. This realization made my stomach feel like it had a hole in the bottom of it.

Come to find out, the girl he'd kinda been seeing before me had flaked out on him Thursday and Friday and so he was excited to get me out there because he knew I cared about racing and that I was anxious to spend time with him. When I came out Saturday, he knew I was the better woman. Once he told me that, I felt so sick over it that it literally gave me a lump in my throat.

He told me not to worry about it, that we weren't that serious yet and all of that. He told me he understood why I didn't stay and that it was perfectly okay.

He may think that, but I know the truth. I still can't forgive myself for not being there at a time when he really wanted the support of friends, rather than just the racing community. Knowing what I really was doing at that time, rather than being where I should have been...it still makes me feel a little nauseated and I can still feel that lump.

I should have been there.

30 Days of Truth: Day Two - High-Fiving Myself

(sorry. i know this isn't exactly the day after my last post but i'm busy trying to rebuild a camper before november 5th)

(also, OMG, I just remembered NaNoWriMo. Shit.)

Okay. This may not be the most comfortable of subjects but, at the same time, sometimes I really like being conceited. Since I ragged on myself pretty harshly last time, it's time for some emotional redemption!

Day 02 → Something you love about yourself.

I'm going to be a little contradictory from last post, because I know you'll allow it. Just go with it.

I love my hair. It's thick and wavy. It's really long. It's a pretty natural blond color that bleaches out in the sun to make it lighter with even whiter natural highlights. And if that's not working, I *may* help it along a little!

Since my self-hating post of 2001, I've managed to learn some new tricks. I use Paul Mitchell shampoo which, believe it or not, actually does what it claims: It's made my hair's texture a bit smoother and stronger. If I use that shampoo and go to sleep with wet hair, I wake up with beautiful, soft curls. A little hair polish creme, and I'm usually good to go. If I straighten it, my hair appears thinner (not always a bad thing), and it looks a bit more shiny.

My hair is so long now that I can tuck it into my waistband. Sometimes I leave it long, sometimes I put it up in a messy up-do, or sometimes I style it into a 1940s style. Regardless of what I do, people look. People always - almost every time I meet someone for the first time - say something about it.

My students at school, as much as I hate those fuckers, always say nice stuff about my hair. They want to know if it's extensions. They want to know if they can touch it. They want to know if it's real. Strange, strange kids! But they're all black, Hispanic, or Asian, and none of them really 'get' white girl hair so they always want to touch it. I had a girl pet me one year and it was creepy. Now I just tell them 'sure, but make it snappy.' This year, I'll probably tell them I don't like to be touched and leave it at that.

The other thing I really like about myself are my eyes. Yeah, they're kind of big, but I've learned a few makeup tricks to help with that. The color really is very pretty and not a day goes by that someone doesn't say something about my eyes to me. Again, I think I have one student who doesn't have brown eyes - his are hazel - and so they're always staring at them, asking me if they're real, and so on.

Even as I'm writing this, I'm still thinking about all the other things I hate about myself. It's weird how I always try to negate it.

Well, besides the camper that I need to get back to, my laptop battery's about to die and there's no plug out here. I'm going to run for now, but I do promise that I will be back soon to keep writing. Troy is taking a new job that will put him offshore for 2 weeks at a time, so I think I'll have lots of free time now. :-(

30 Days of Truth: Day One - Giving Myself the Finger

Sure, I'll jump on the bandwagon. One of my biggest inspirations, Anastacia over at JurgenNation.com, was the first person I saw to post it. After a bit of investigation, I've seen several bloggers working through the same month-long unintentional therapy exercises. Before I begin, I'll give you the whole 30 days of topics, in case you want to join in.

Day 01 → Something you hate about yourself.
Day 02 → Something you love about yourself.
Day 03 → Something you have to forgive yourself for.
Day 04 → Something you have to forgive someone for.
Day 05 → Something you hope to do in your life.
Day 06 → Something you hope you never have to do.
Day 07 → Someone who has made your life worth living for.
Day 08 → Someone who made your life hell, or treated you like shit.
Day 09 → Someone you didn’t want to let go, but just drifted.
Day 10 → Someone you need to let go, or wish you didn’t know.
Day 11 → Something people seem to compliment you the most on.
Day 12 → Something you never get compliments on.
Day 13 → A band or artist that has gotten you through some tough ass days. (write a letter.)
Day 14 → A hero that has let you down. (letter)
Day 15 → Something or someone you couldn’t live without, because you’ve tried living without it.
Day 16 → Someone or something you definitely could live without.
Day 17 → A book you’ve read that changed your views on something.
Day 18 → Your views on gay marriage.
Day 19 → What do you think of religion? Or what do you think of politics?
Day 20 → Your views on drugs and alcohol.
Day 21 → (scenario) Your best friend is in a car accident and you two got into a fight an hour before. What do you do?
Day 22 → Something you wish you hadn’t done in your life.
Day 23 → Something you wish you had done in your life.
Day 24 → Make a playlist to someone, and explain why you chose all the songs. (Just post the titles and artists and letter)
Day 25 → The reason you believe you’re still alive today.
Day 26 → Have you ever thought about giving up on life? If so, when and why?
Day 27 → What’s the best thing going for you right now?
Day 28 → What if you were pregnant or got someone pregnant, what would you do?
Day 29 → Something you hope to change about yourself. And why.
Day 30 → A letter to yourself, tell yourself EVERYTHING you love about yourself

I wrote an essay/editorial/article type thing for a second-rate woman's magazine many years ago that was all about the things I hate about myself. They also prompted me to write an open letter to Victoria's Secret, cleverly disguised as an open letter to the "lingerie industry." Sure. I'm sure Bali has pissed off a TON of people...

Anyway, I digress, as usual.

Back in 2001, I wrote a fairly honest and painful essay about all the things I hate about myself. I'm republishing it here, with a few things updated because, LUCKILY, I've changed a bit.

"I hate this hair. This ashy, thick, course hair. The type of hair that used to be so pretty when I was a young girl, but soured with age, along with my personality. The kind of hair that frizzes if you even joke about rain. The kind of hair that never looks good or nice without a stylist's attention.

I hate my eyebrows. They are clear and thin and cannot be sculpted.

I hate my eyes. My big, blue, overpowering eyes. The bug eyes that people made fun of my whole life. These eyes leak way too much. They get bloodshot for no apparent reason. These eyes will not tolerate being opened underwater. These eyes resist the use of contact lenses, no matter how many times I try. My eyes were borrowed from my father, but he grew into his. Particularly distasteful is the left eyelid; the one that bares the white scar from my ex-husband, who tried to claw out my eyes in a fight. Also distasteful, the right. The right eye with the perpetual dark circle - only noticeable if pointed out - that still remains, years after another fight with my ex-husband, where he blackened my eye, dark as night. (if they're the windows to my soul, it seems quite like he was trying to get at and kill my very essence, now wasn't he?) These eyes, that remain puffy for a day or two after a crying jag. These eyes have no spark left, and I just can't stand them. The older I get, the more people comment on them - in a good way.

I hate this nose. The nose that has large, clogged pores, broken blood vessels around the nostrils, and permanent lines drawn across it. This nose is hypersensitive to the touch, and freaks out at the slightest hint of cat dander. This nose is a small distraction, with its upturned and pointy end. My father lent me his nose, as well, along with all of its allergies, skin characteristics, and complications.

My teeth are a disgrace. Besides the coffee stains and white spots from mineral intake, they are crooked. They won't ever be straight. I could never get braces now, even if I could afford them. My bottom teeth overlap and are so close together that they split the floss. They're getting inadvertently ground down on the molars from complications with TMJ.

I hate my shoulders. My masculine, straight-across, non-sloping shoulders. It's hard to buy shirts that fit. When I find the right size, they're made for women with more boobs than I got. I hate having to remove all the shoulder pads out of all my clothes because of those shoulders. I have to admit, though, sometimes they're pretty cool.

I hate these fingers. These short, stubby fingers that churn out these words. They're ugly. They're plain. They're my mother's fingers. I wanted my own. I wanted fingers that look long and elegant, that look feminine, that look pretty with jewelry on them.

I hate those fingernails that finish the ends of those stubby fingers. In an attempt to lengthen my digits, the nails grow long. Whore-ish. Wal-Mart-Cashier-ish. Trashy. Those strong, thick nails that make a tappity noise on my keyboard, rub a hole in my space bar, and scrape all the paint off my E and N keys. I hate them. They resist polish and refuse to stay nice. They're so tough that, when they break, they snap all the way at the bottom near the nailbed.

I hate my breasts. I have none. I look like a little child who has not reached puberty. I feel like a man, and I look like one too. I look terrible in swimsuits, summer clothes, and dresses. I have always been teased, and I can easily see why. I hate that I can't buy pretty underwear or cute clothes without looking like a little girl playing dress-up in something just a tad bit too big.

I hate my stomach, which used to be flat and strong, and is now slightly round and soft. The skin is loose and squishy, and if I'm not very careful to hold it in during my bloated days, I sometimes resemble a pregnant woman. I get tired of people asking me if I'm pregnant. I hate children. My weight fluctuates so much - by 10 or 15 pounds - I can never get myself looking quite right.

I hate my legs. My hips are getting a little big, but my legs…they're too short and tree-trunk-ish. I have my mother's legs, too. My legs seem to stay pale these days, as I don't like to go out in public scantily-clad. These legs are always tired from running. My calves are too thick to wear the most sexy boots. I get ingrown hairs on the widest parts from the constant friction on my jeans. And my leg hair, while I'm at it, is sparse and totally clear which, I guess, is actually kinda cool.

I hate my feet. They, too, were inherited from my mother. With short, stubby little toes that have very little nail. One touch from a brush and they're polished. Feet that are a little smaller than average, yet the stores are always out of my size.

This skin that holds it all in, yes, I hate this skin too. A nasty, pasty, slightly orangey pale color, that is never properly hydrated. I hate it, as well. This skin, that is dotted with small, dark colored moles in the most inconvenient of places, that makes me look like I'm spotted with mud. This skin that struggles to stay clear and blemish-free, no matter how I treat it.

And that's just what you can see. Think about everything that is inside of me that I wish I could kill. All the things inside of me that I wish would die and just go away…Think of all the things inside of me that I cannot change. Things that I can change, but don't know how. Think about all the things inside of me that I don't even understand.

I hate how I always need to be needed. I hate that I need people, because they don't need me. I hate that I never *really* have anybody and, if I do, it's only temporary. I hate that I'm so dependent, and that I'm so pathetic. I hate that I will throw 100% if myself into something when I never get half of that back. I hate that I am biologically unhappy, and nothing can change that. I hate that I failed at the most simplistic of tasks -- suicide. I hate that I have fallen in love with people that I can never have, and can never get over. I hate that nothing is ever good enough. For me, or for anyone else. I hate that I give my all to something, and no one notices. I hate that I feel I am unloved, unappreciated, unnoticed, unattractive inside and out, and that I am destined to be alone. I hate that I try and I try so fucking hard to get ahead, but all I manage to accomplish is just to hold it together for one more day, before I break down and bawl at the end of the evening. I hate that all the energy I spend on just keeping it together is the same energy that other people use to get an education, or jump-start a career, or have a family. And what do I do? Merely get by.

I hate me. I hate almost everything about me. I hate almost every single, solitary thing about myself, and I don't even have the energy or the motivation to change even the things I have control over. Mostly because I don't think anyone would notice or care."

Admittedly, I'm still not thrilled with myself but I think I'm in a much better place than I was when I wrote this 9 years ago. 25 was a really bad, bad age for me. I'd like to think I've become more objective with myself and have realized that I need to work on making a difference in the things I hate about myself. So far, I think I've been pretty successful.

Honestly, I'm not too jazzed about Day Two. Oh well. I've made a commitment.
